Description: This four-hour training reviews events in medicine and psychology, and social work that led to the development of holistic models of health and the current biopsychosocial used in therapy with the discussion of the emergence of multidimensional models of wellness. The title of the training is intended to convey an effort to help participants to sort positive models for future research and practice of wellness in therapeutic settings from the now widespread use of the term “wellness” in public advertisements and fitness venues.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the emergence of the biopsychosocial model, the holistic view of health in therapy, how to talk about wellness in counseling and assessing client outcomes.
- Describe how to enhance case planning by including multi-dimensional wellness models as part of biopsychosocial assessment and planning for positive behavior change.
- Assess client motivation to change maladaptive behaviors to improve positive change.
- Understand the limitations of current efforts to quantify wellness outcomes.
Outline: The four hours of this CE training includes the following:
- Overview of the emergence of the biopsychosocial model in therapy and the use of a holistic wellness model in assessment and planning for client change. Distinguish wellness models in therapeutic practice versus popular uses of the word wellness as a catch word in fitness programs and advertising.
- Exploration of uses of multi-dimensional holistic models of wellness in therapy and counseling including: emotional, social, physical, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, financial and environmental wellness.
- Present and discuss measurement of wellness outcomes and where future research is needed.
- Conclusion
Participants: People who may enjoy this training either to integrate wellness assessment into their practice or learn more about wellness models include practicing therapists, counselors, nurses, physicians and counselors. Community workers and the general public may enjoy this training to learn more of the history and current research on wellness models for use in therapy.

- This training is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists for 4 CE credits.
- This training is approved for a total of 4 entry-level continuing education contact hours by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC).

- Cancellation two weeks prior to the training = 50% refund
- Cancellation anytime after two weeks prior to the training = NO REFUND but payment can be applied to a future training
