About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

The world runs on APIs and containers. It’s time testers did too.

Modern quality engineering isn’t just about UI tests and manual flows—it’s about understanding the systems beneath the surface. At our 16th Porto Meetup, we’re diving into two pillars of modern development: APIs and Docker. Join us for a dual-session evening with Paulo Oliveira and Gil Coelho as we break down the fundamentals, tackle common misconceptions, and show how strategic testing and smart environments can level up any QA or dev workflow.

Date: 9th July 2025

Time: 6:30 PM – 09:00 PM (Portugal Time)

Venue: DBServices Portugal (UPTEC Asprela I - R. Alfredo Allen n.º 455 461, 4200-135 Porto)

Session 1: Behind the Click: How APIs Make Everything Work

Speaker: Paulo Oliveira, Quality Assurance Engineer at Mindera

APIs are the backbone of nearly every digital experience—from food delivery to fintech. But for many testers, API testing still feels abstract, overly technical, or limited to a basic GET request and a 200 OK.

In this session, Paulo Oliveira will bring clarity to what APIs really are, how they work, and what truly needs to be validated. Through practical breakdowns and real-world heuristics, you’ll learn how to think about APIs strategically—and how to test them with purpose. Expect analogies, tools, and take-home tips to improve your API confidence.

Key Takeaways:

  • The anatomy of a modern API call
  • What to test (and what not to)
  • Testing tools and practical heuristics

Speaker Bio:

Paulo Oliveira is a QA expert with over 18 years of experience and a Master’s in Computer Science focused on testing and AI. He’s led large-scale QA teams, mentors engineers, and publishes thought leadership on test automation and applied AI. Currently, he works on a high-complexity project as a QA Engineer while continuing to teach and contribute to the testing community.

Session 2: One Container to Rule Them All

Speaker: Gil Coelho, Software Engineer at Critical Tech Works

Consistency, speed, and reproducibility—that’s the promise of containers. In this session, Gil Coelho will break down the role of Docker in today’s DevOps workflows and show why it matters to every QA and dev.

You’ll explore core Docker concepts, how it fits into CI/CD pipelines, and how to use Dev Containers to onboard fast, eliminate “it works on my machine” bugs, and build predictable environments. Gil wraps up with a live demo showing how fast you can spin up a ready-to-code system. Whether you’re new to containers or want to apply them more strategically—this session is for you.

Key Takeaways:

  • What Docker is and why it matters
  • Using containers in CI/CD pipelines
  • How Dev Containers streamline team environments

Speaker Bio:

Gil Coelho is a full-stack engineer turned Tech Lead at Critical Tech Works, with a Master's in Electrical and Computer Engineering. His career spans computer vision, automotive testing systems, and core OS development. Gil blends deep technical chops with a creative streak, and he’s passionate about building systems that make developer lives easier.

When not coding, you’ll find him co-hosting a Toastmasters club, riding bikes, or reading one of the books he swore he’d never get into.

This meetup is for you if:

  • You want to stop fearing APIs and start testing them confidently
  • You’re a QA or Dev aiming to improve collaboration through shared environments
  • You’re curious about how Docker and DevOps impact modern quality workflows
