About this event

Arts • Literary Arts

This three-session online course offers an introduction to the intersections between artmaking and writing, exploring how language can function as both a conceptual framework and a practical tool for visual artists. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, artists have turned to written language to expand the expressive and intellectual scope of their practice—using words as image, as metaphor, and as structure. Through discussion, examples, and short creative exercises, participants will examine how writing can operate as a generative process parallel to artmaking, a means to clarify intention, and a form of artistic material in its own right. The course is designed for artists and writers interested in developing a more fluid dialogue between text and image, thought and form.

Key areas will include an overview of how language and writing have influenced—and been embraced and incorporated by—visual artists; an outline of strategies for producing artworks that integrate text; and an exploration of how writing can serve as a non-literary, practical, and theoretical tool within visual and performance art practices.

The online course is structured as follows:

First session (Thursday, November 13th, 6-8pm):

Second session (Friday, November 14th, 6-8pm):

Third session (Saturday, November 15th, 10-12pm): presentation and discussion of individual projects.

A number of readings will be assigned to further explore the topics discussed in this class.

Registration fee: $200 (participants will receive zoom links prior to class)
