*This webinar is part of our NYAC Summer Encore Series — a limited-time showcase of archived programs, re-airing exclusively this August*
From art to architecture, politics to pleasure, and trade to transportation, the city of London is one of the world's greatest urban centers in so many different ways. But how exactly did a small Iron Age settlement on the banks of the River Thames develop into the world’s largest city by the 20th century? With the help of some of London's top tour guides, it's time to uncover the most pivotal events in London's history, and how those moments helped the city become one of the greatest metropolises on Planet Earth.
Join New York Adventure Club for an epic eight-part series on the incredible story of London, spanning from the height of the Roman Empire nearly 2000 years ago to the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. In Chapter 2: Saxon London, we'll explore the often overlooked gap between the Romans and the Normans known as the "Dark Ages," and how Saxons put in place many of the features that would come to define modern London.
Led by award winning London Blue Badge Tour Guide Fiona Lukas, this chapter of our digital showcase will include:
- A discussion of what happened when the Romans left, from what became of Londinium to how it transformed into the trading centre of Lundenwic
- The true stories of Legendary kings Arthur and Alfred
- A deep dive into the late Saxon monarchs and their bitter battle over generations for the prize that was London
- An overview of how the twin centers of London — The City and Westminster — were formed in Saxon times
- A look at physical structures during the Saxon era that have survived over a 1000 years later
