'The Spring Sacrifice of Marzanna' at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens

By Michelle Cieloszczyk

Overview

Artist Michelle Cieloszczyk invites folks to join her in a ritual drowning of effigies!

'The Spring Sacrifice of Marzanna' at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens

Michelle and the Ann Arbor Polonia Association invite folks to reinterpret a thousand-year-old Slavic cultural tradition on the mythological figure of Marzanna (the goddess of winter, disease, and death). Together we will construct effigies from natural materials, march with them alongside a live singing choir, and sacrifice them in Willow Pond.

Effigy Building Workshop: 12pm - 2pm (registration is required)

Effigy Sacrifice: 2pm - 3pm (open to the public)

Reception: 3 - 5pm
