Da Book Joint invites you to an unforgettable evening celebrating the launch of Nikesha Elise Williams’ powerful new novel, The Seven Daughters of Dupree. Williams will be joined in conversation by award-winning journalist and author Dawn Turner for a rich discussion on legacy, memory, and the women who shape our histories.
About the Book
It’s 1995, and fourteen-year-old Tati Dupree is determined to uncover the identity of her father. But her mother, Nadia, guards her secrets fiercely, while her grandmother Gladys remains silent about the family’s past—including why she fled Land’s End, Alabama, in 1953. As Tati searches for answers, she uncovers a legacy of buried truths, where every generation of Dupree women has posed more questions than answers.
Spanning nearly a century, the novel traces the lives of seven generations of Dupree women: from Jubi in 1917, whose attempt to pass for white ends when she gives birth to Ruby; to Ruby’s fiery love affair in 1934 that leads to a child of her own; to the night in 1980 that alters Nadia’s future forever. Bound by a mysterious malediction—one that ensures the Dupree women will only give birth to daughters—they carry the weight of a legacy shaped by enslavement, survival, and the relentless pursuit of freedom.
The Seven Daughters of Dupree masterfully explores generational trauma, Black women’s resilience, and unbreakable familial bonds. Echoing the literary power of The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis, Nikesha Elise Williams delivers a sweeping feminist work of literary fiction that examines how secrets, love, and choice ripple through generations.
