The Science of Substance Use and the Business Case for Supporting Workers

By Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences
Online event

Overview

This online will explore the impact of substance use on workers and why supporting them is not only ethical but also makes for good business

This one-hour session will examine substance use disorder (SUD) as a medical condition that affects physical and mental health. Biological and environmental factors contribute to the development and progression of the condition. Scientific understanding of SUD can help inform prevention and treatment strategies that lessen the toll substance misuse takes on individuals, families, workplaces, and communities. Given its prevalence, employers must understand the impact of SUD on their workforce. This session will highlight how the Total Worker Health® framework informs the business case for employers to embrace a Recovery Friendly Workplace approach, one that supports employees across the continuum, from prevention and treatment to long-term recovery.

1 hour of continuing education credits through SHRM and Credentialing Public Health (CPH) Professionals and Certified Safety Professionals (CSP)
