Background knowledge and oral language are essential foundations for comprehension and learning across all content areas. This interactive workshop explores the reciprocal relationship between the two and provides practical strategies to enhance both in the classroom.
Participants will engage in hands-on activities, discover effective techniques for fostering rich conversations, and explore how technology can support language development and knowledge building.
By the end of the session, educators will leave with actionable strategies to strengthen student learning through intentional oral language experiences.
Participants will:
- Understand the connection between oral language and background knowledge in learning and comprehension.
- Explore strategies to build background knowledge through read-alouds, discussions, multimedia, and real-world experiences.
- Learn techniques to support oral language development, including explicit vocabulary instruction, scaffolding, and student talk strategies.
- Discover technology tools that enhance background knowledge and language development.
- Develop an action plan for integrating these strategies into their instructional practices.
