Detroit, MI — The Preservation of Jazz proudly presents The Preservation of Jazz Masterclass led by Detroit’s own award-winning vocalist and cultural arts educator Sky Covington. This intimate and inspiring program offers an unforgettable journey into the heart, history, and etiquette of jazz — the art form that continues to shape music and culture around the world.

Students will be immersed in the elegance and discipline of jazz through guided discussions, curated listening sessions, and storytelling that reveals the soul behind the music. The masterclass encourages reflection, participation, and cultural awareness, blending education with real conversation about jazz’s legacy and its continued influence today.

Class Focus Includes:

Jazz Etiquette & Stage Presence: The unspoken rules of professionalism, performance, and respect on and off the bandstand.

The History of Jazz: Exploring the origins of jazz — from blues, gospel, and ragtime to swing, bebop, soul, and modern expressions.

The Jazz Conversation: Open dialogue on artistry, storytelling, improvisation, and the personal voice behind every note.

Listening Sessions: Study and appreciate the sound of the legends through guided, reflective listening experiences.

Exploring Jazz Genres: Learn how jazz has inspired and fused with gospel, funk, soul, Latin, and contemporary music.

Guest Speakers & Performers: Enjoy special visits from Detroit’s most respected musicians, historians, and cultural voices.

Field Trips: Visit historic jazz landmarks and spaces that helped define Detroit’s music legacy.

Journaling & Reflection: Bring your journal each week to record inspirations, insights, and personal takeaways from each session.


About the Instructor

Sky Covington is an 11-time Detroit Music Award winner and the founder of The Preservation of Jazz. With over two decades of experience as a performer, producer, and cultural arts advocate, Sky has become one of Detroit’s most beloved ambassadors of jazz. Her masterclasses emphasize spirit, authenticity, and artistry — reminding students that jazz is more than music; it’s a way of life.
