The Politics of Whiskey (Course #385)

Since before the United States was formed, the production, distribution and consumption of alcohol has had a significant impact on this country. The industry grew from the corn and rye fields as farmers and families supplemented their household income, both legally and not so legally.

The oversight and regulation of alcohol is as divisive as any other issue in our country’s history. Thus politics plays a major factor in all aspects of spirits from production, to distribution, to sales, and even consumption. Intertwined with federal taxes, to outright prohibition, to the development of the three-tiered system - alcohol cannot be separated from political influences.

In a couple of hours, we’ll explore and discuss some of those factors and enjoy a sample or two of whiskey that relates to each of the major time periods.
