The People's Poets BIPOC Open Mic Featuring: Diego
Overview
The People’s Poets is an open mic experience curated to amplify voices of color in the PNW. We aim to support both aspiring and established writers in our community with a platform to share their talents. We believe all writers of color deserve a safe space where their voices are not marginalized. The People’s Poets is a home for creatives and community lovers to feel inspired, validated, and poetically nourished. With the alarming rate of gentrification in the PNW it is crucial for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) poets to have a place to gather and embrace one another's voice, culture, and story. The People’s Poets is a safe space where everyone is welcome, but the mic is reserved exclusively for the BIPOC community. We are now hosted every second Sunday at Akadi!
Doors open at 1pm show starts around 1:30pm! Tickets will be $15 at the door!
This is an all ages event. Food and drinks will be available for purchase!
Hosted by Brianna Renae & DJ Afreakano!
About the featured poet:
Diego is a Chicano poet and performer originally from South Central Los Angeles, now based in Portland, Oregon. Deeply influenced by the voices of Miguel Piñero, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Pablo Neruda, and Nikki Giovanni, his work blends political urgency with lyrical intimacy. Diego’s poetry addresses the struggles of Black and Brown communities, the weight of silence, and the complexity of love in a broken world. Diego released his first self-published chapbook "I Choose Fire" this past September. He is currently working on translating that book into Spanish and simultaneously working on his next book set to be released in December. Known for his raw delivery and unapologetic voice, Diego writes because silence is no longer an option and many still sit too quiet.
