What’s different about this book club?

We don’t gather just to read books. We gather to practice the art of dialogue: listening, thinking, and conversing together, and adding context to expand our awareness and ways of seeing.

What kinds of books will we read?

Books are chosen collectively. Expect philosophy, history, culture, sci-fi, literature, psychology, and works that unsettle or expand our ways of seeing — not just easy reads, but texts that invite introspection, meta-perspectives, and spark good dialogue.

What if I haven’t read much philosophy before?

Accepted Answer

That’s okay. You don’t need expertise, only curiosity and presence. This circle is about exploring together, not showing off knowledge.

Is there anything else I need to do to prepare?

We recommend and invite you to read "Notes on Dialogue" by Stringfellow Barr and our group charter. Both will be available in Discord, FB, and at in-person sessions. Joining the Discord is optional for in-person members, but it's where we share and continue conversations between gatherings

Is there an age requirement?

Yes, 18+ for this gathering. This keeps the circle aligned with its purpose of serious, attentive dialogue.

How structured is the discussion?

Accepted Answer

Each gathering has a light structure, consisting of an opening ritual, dialogue, and a closing round. The host maintains the purpose, but the conversation flows in a group-driven manner.

How are books chosen?

Accepted Answer

Together. We use a ranked-choice voting process, allowing everyone to have a voice in the selection.

What if I disagree strongly with someone?

Accepted Answer

That’s welcome. Challenge the idea, care for the person. Ask questions for clarification before making a counterpoint, and do your best to embody the group ethos and norms (you'll get familiar with these in the gatherings, and by reading

How do I suggest a future book?

Accepted Answer

You’ll be invited to submit titles. Each submission includes a short note on “why now” and one excerpt. Future books are chosen by ranked-choice vote—consideration list and ongoing discussion available on our Discord and Facebook groups.

Will sessions be publicly broadcast/recorded?

Accepted Answer

No. To protect privacy and create safety, dialogue blocks will not be recorded. Harvest notes may be shared, but only with explicit permission and after achieving group consensus.

Is this religious or political?

Accepted Answer

We’re not a partisan project or a spiritual sect. What we are is a circle for exploring ideas that shape how we live—spiritual, cultural, political, ecological. These themes inevitably arise, but our commitment is to dialogue and mutual inquiry, not ideology.

That sounds political/ideological — how can you not be?

We don’t claim to stand outside history or politics. Every choice—books we read, how we gather, how we listen—reflects values. What makes this circle unique is that we hold those values open to inquiry and development, in an attempt to look through and beyond, from deep history into the emergent.

Do I need to read the book beforehand?

Accepted Answer

No. The circle is open—you’re welcome to join at any point, even if you haven’t read all the previous chapters. We value presence and dialogue over “keeping up.” You can always catch up at your own pace, and the group will be open to questions about what’s come before.

Is this in person or virtual?

Accepted Answer

Both. You can join us in person at the venue in National City, or online through Discord [RSVP to coordinate with host]. The circle will be held simultaneously.

What should I bring?

Accepted Answer

Your presence, curiosity, and a willingness to listen and share. Optional: a quiet, shareable snack or drink.
