About this event

Have you ever felt the snap, crackle, and pop of poetic electricity?

Poetry Night (by the illiterists at Burn & Rave)is an evening where words waltz and haikus roar, all to the beat of your creative beatnik soul, where bohemian dreams come true, and where poetry gets a hip, happening twist.

Join us for a night of open mic and an epic haiku battle! Prizes awarded to "Best Poem" and "Haiku Champion!"

But wait, there's more! Open mic poets will have the choice of musical accompaniment galore: bongos, cello, piano, and more, so come to listen and explore the immense depth and power of the written word.

So feel free to don your berets, shades, and your hippest threads and come be a part of Modesto's literary legacy.

THIS MONTH'S HAIKU BATTLE THEME: Summer Nights

Frequently asked questions

How do I participate in the Haiku Battle?

Sign up at the show! If you would like to compete, be prepared with 6-8 haiku written in a strict 5/7/5 format. Each haiku battler will be guaranteed to read two haiku in a double-elimination bracketing system. Haiku should be themed around the monthly topic.

How do I sign up for the Poetry Open Mic?

Sign ups will be at the show on a first come, first served basis. We will select the first 10 poets & others will be added an alternate list who will read if time allows. Please limit poems to no more than 3-5 minutes. There is no theme required or restrictions on tone, content, or subject matter.

Do I have to read?

No! Come to be inspired and entertained, come to share your work, or come for both. The choice is yours. Nobody will be compelled to read, but you might be asked to judge our haiku battle!
