The Histories and Mysteries of Ballroom: Monthly Lecture Series

Session 1: "Genesis: When Did Ballroom Begin?"

"The Histories and Mysteries of Ballroom" is a lecture series from ballroom legend, ballroom historian and former Co-EP on Legendary (HBOMax), Sydney Baloue, that explores contentious facts and unresolved questions about ballroom history.

In this first lecture, "Genesis," Syd explores one of the befuddling questions in the community today: When does ballroom culture really begin?

While ballroom culture has spanned the globe through popular phrases like "throwing shade," "slaying" and through pop stars like Madonna, Queen Latifah, and Beyonce, few really know or understand where the culture comes from and how it arrived on our many screens today.

Check out this lecture to learn a bit more about this vibrant Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ culture that has touched the world from a true expert, who has lived it, studied it and who is excited to share it with the world at PRS!

ABOUT SYDNEY:

Sydney Baloue is a writer, producer, director, dancer, archivist and journalist. He was Co-Executive Producer on HBOMax’s LEGENDARY Seasons 1 and 2. In 2022, he was the first Black trans man in the Writers Guild of America after working as a staff writer in scripted TV on THE VANISHING HALF (HBO) and TOM SWIFT (CW). Syd is an author of a history-memoir tentatively entitled, Undeniable: A History of Voguing, Ballroom And How it Changed My Life (And the World). He was the first trans man to solely win Grand Prize for “Old Way” at the Latex Ball in 2019.
