In times of environmental degradation, transition, and unrest, restoration of healthy soils and ancestral foodways is both necessary and beautiful. As the health and sustainability of the food we eat and the land it's grown from fall into deeper peril, more and more people are hearing the calls for change. In our country, the vast majority of farmland owners are white, and practice industrial forms of agriculture that strain the land and decay soils. This is not the fault of farmers, but the fault of institutional discrimination, lack of access to capital, and a farm subsidy system that does not take into account the health of our lands nor the quality of stewardship. We need investment in more equitable food systems, and a return to indigenous and historical forms of agriculture that can improve lives and promote sound environmental and food policies.
