Course Description:

It is becoming more common for counselors and social workers to treat individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a co-occurring disorder such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or ADHD. While it is beyond the ethical boundaries of counselors and social workers to diagnose an individual with ASD, it is within their scope of practice to develop a better understanding of the disorder as a whole and to learn treatment approaches that are adapted to the unique needs of each individual. In this session, we will also discuss how individuals with ASD use coping skills such as masking to manage interactions in a neurotypical world. We will also take part in a discussion about our role as potential advocates for our clients on the autism spectrum and how we can assist them in creating a safe space where they can interact with others on their own terms.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

  1. Be able to define Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and identify common symptoms.
    2. Develop an understanding of how ASD is diagnosed in children/adolescents and adults.
    3. Identify potential risk factors contributing to diagnosis of ASD.
    4. Identify co-occurring disorders and common issues often associated with ASD.
    5. Learn the definition of masking within ASD.
    6. Learn ways to treat clients within this population.
    7. Learn to advocate for clients and discuss social justice issues associated with ASD.
