Join Sundial Centre for Education on Harmful Practices (previously Oxford Against Cutting) for our first conference: "The Fabric of Shame".

To mark our 10th anniversary, we invite you to join our high profile speakers, survivors of harmful practices and practitioners to take a deep dive into reflections on 'shame'.

The conference will focus on issues of "honour" in practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM/C), forced marriage and spiritual abuse.

We will explore how 'honour', reputation and shame are woven into the very fabric of our society and underpin harmful practices that impact families and communities across the UK.

By unpicking the threads of 'shame' in our individual and collective identities, from sociological and psychological perspectives, the conference will support new understanding and collaborations to help us change thinking and support vulnerable people.

SPEAKERS INCLUDE:

Dr Roxanne Khan

Dr Roxanne Khan (onEvidence, Director) is Founding Director of HARM (Honour Abuse Research Matrix) – a global network reforming domestic abuse policy and practice.

Dr Khan is author of The Psychology of ‘Honor’ Abuse, Violence, and Killing – the first textbook on this topic for safeguarding and criminal justice practitioners, researchers, and students. With a foreword by Payzee Mahmod, this internationally acclaimed book is available at all good bookshops. All book royalties will be donated to IKWRO and Halo Project. As a multi-award-winning research leader, Dr Khan’s pioneering work ‘Domestic Abuse in UK Universities’ was shortlisted by the prestigious Times Higher Education Award, for ‘Research Project of the Year’ 2022.

Pragna Patel

Pragna Patel is the Co-founder and Co-director of Project Resist, an organisation focused on work with marginalised and vulnerable women and girls throughout the UK. She is the former director and founding member of the Southall Black Sisters (SBS) advocacy and campaigning centre where she worked from 1982 to Jan 2022 with a break in 1993 when she left to train and practice as a solicitor. Over those 40 years, she led SBS in some of its most important cases and campaigns on gender-based abuse, immigration and religious fundamentalism. Pragna was also a founding member of Women Against Fundamentalism and is a member of Feminist Dissent. She has written extensively on race, gender and religion. She continues with her work in these areas at Project Resist.

Payzee Mahmod

Payzee Mahmod is an award winning activist, campaigner and public speaker who consults on issues of gender equality. She is a survivor advocate, having experienced child marriage and ‘honour’ based abuse. She is currently a campaigner for IKWRO, a charity that provides advice and support to Middle Eastern, North African, and Afghan women and girls living in the UK who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing all forms of “honor” based abuse, such as forced marriage, child marriage, female genital mutilation, and domestic abuse. Payzee recently led a petition in support of IKWRO's Safeguard Futures, Ban Child Marriage campaign, which drew nearly 250,000 signatures. Payzee was named the 2021 UK Parliament Volunteer of the Year for her advocacy work, and she received special recognition at the UN Women UK Awards 2020. She is a member of Girls Not Brides, a global network of civil society organisations countries committed to ending child marriage.
