The Effect by Lucy Prebble
Overview
Control protects. Surrender destroys.
Two volunteers enter a clinical trial for a new, mysterious antidepressant and soon develop an unexpected attraction. Watching from behind the glass, their doctors - tasked with staying objective - grow increasingly unsure whether these feelings are real or drug-induced. As emotion and chemistry collide, the trial races toward a reckoning that asks a provocative question: is love authentic, or can it be manufactured?
The play dives into themes of control, vulnerability, and the delicate ethics surrounding mind, body, and emotion.
