We will look back on the last five years of high-impact local stories, chat about what community reporter Mick Sweetman should dive into next and connect with other people in Nanaimo passionate about keeping our community informed and focused on solutions.
As many of you know, Julie and Mick's reporting with The Discourse Nanaimo has earned our independent news outlet a series of national awards for investigative and community news.
Julie's first in-depth reporting on homelessness in Nanaimo in 2020 helped launch our independent news outlet, and five years later — thanks in part to financial support from our readership — we are still going strong!
In 2024, we said goodbye to Julie as she embarked on a new journey to complete her master's degree in journalism at Carleton University. In early November, she'll be in town to attend a journalism award ceremony for her work on The Discourse's investigative story about the Regional District of Nanaimo's crackdown on tiny homes.
