The Counseling Compact: Practicing Legally & Ethically Across State Lines

Live webcast

December 12, 2025, 8:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Central Time

3.0 CE hrs., NBCC approved

The Counseling Compact is here! This webinar equips professional counselors to participate in the Compact.

The Counseling Compact became operational on September 30. Through this interstate compact, qualified licensed professional counselors in 37+ Compact Member States can legally practice in other Compact Member States.

This 3 CE hour program for professional counselors will:

  • Provide an understanding of how practice across state lines really works
  • Explain just what the Counseling Compact is and how it functions
  • Guide participants through the steps for participation in the Counseling Compact

The Counseling Compact creates a landmark change in the Professional Counseling landscape. If you own a private practice or manage services at an organization/agency you need to be knowledgeable about the Counseling Compact and understand how it works. Importantly, if you have a specialty practice or work for an organization that serves special populations, the Counseling Compact can allow you to provide services to clients across the country.

Note from Dr. Casey:

I have observed that there are more than a few misunderstandings, misconceptions, and myths (some of which are quite pernicious) surrounding practice across state lines and interstate compacts. This has left many therapists confused and frustrated. This program will provide reliable information, sources, and helpful tools that will help you cut through the confusion.

The extensive course materials are packed with practical information and resources.

The program covers:

  • What is the Counseling Compact and how does it work?
  • Who is eligible to become a Compact counselor?
  • States that are currently part of the Counseling Compact
  • When could I begin practicing under the Compact?
  • Process for obtaining a privilege to practice in a Compact Member State
  • Compacts -- One of five ways to legally engage in cross-state practice
  • Why the Counseling Compact will impact psychotherapists of all types
  • Common misconceptions and myths about cross-state practice
  • Misunderstandings about the Counseling Compact
  • Interstate compacts and their implications for private practices & organizations

Speaker:

Terry Casey, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, HSP (TN #1975). Dr. Casey has trained thousands of mental health professionals about cross-state practice and the Counseling Compact. He has conducted over 300 webinars, seminars, and presentations related to ethical, legal, and practice issues.* Since 2008, he has taught Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in a CACREP-accredited M.S. program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He also served as the Clinical Director for a large counseling and psychological services organization based in Nashville for 17 years. Additionally, Dr. Casey was the Chair of the Ethics Committee for a state-level professional association. Dr. Casey operates a consulting practice near Nashville, Tennessee, serving private practices and counseling/mental health-related organizations.
