"The Chinese State and Ethnicity: Multicivilizational Tensions"

Like other multi-ethnic nation-states, Modern China faces challenges posed by cross-cutting and sometimes seemingly irreconcilable ethnic and national identities. In this talk, the speakers will analyzes the evolution of Chinese state’s policy on ethnic diversity from a global cultural perspective. Professor Dru Gladney from Pomona College will serve as a discussant of the panel.

Bios:

Naran Bilik (纳日碧力戈) is currently a distinguished professor at Fudan University. His research areas are linguistic anthropology, ethnicity and race, culture change, minority education, Inner Asia study and East Asia study. Prof. Bilik was the Bernstein Chair of Asian Studies and Anthropology, Carleton College in the United States from 2005 to 2009. 

Dan Smyer Yu (郁丹) is a Distinguished Professor and Founding Director of Center for Trans-Himalayan Studies at Yunnan Minzu University, and a core researcher of the Transregional Research Network (CETREN) at University of Göttingen. He was a Research Group Leader at Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity. He specializes in trans-regional studies of ethnic relations, religious revitalizations, Sino-Tibetan Buddhist interactions, and globalization.
