🧭 Overview

The BioCompass Traveling Lab presents: Brainstorm Expedition

An exciting pop-up science adventure designed for curious kids and families!

In this event, we’ll dive into the amazing world of neuroscience through hands-on puzzles, experiments, and challenges. Kids will explore how neurons connect, how signals travel, and how the brain adapts — all through activities that include an (optional) up-close look at a real sheep brain that brings the science to life.

  • Lab Session (9:00–11:30 AM) A deeper, guided experience with structured activities. Limited spots; pre-registration recommended.
  • Open Session (1:00–4:00 PM) A free, drop-in exploration for families. Stop by anytime and try our interactive science stations!

Age Range: Best for ages 10+ (grades 5–8), though all families are welcome.

Cost: Free community event; Lab Session requires advance registration.

Location: Find our canopy at the grassy area, west wing of Leo J Ryan Park, right across Safeway.

Join us for a day of discovery as we unlock the secrets of the brain — together!

At BioCompass Kids we believe science should be hands-on and fun. Visit biocompasskids.org or follow us on Instagram @biocompasskids to see experiments, updates, and future Biocompass Traveling Lab events.

Frequently asked questions

Who can attend?

The event is designed for kids ages 10+ (grades 5–8), but younger children are welcome with parent support. Families are encouraged to participate together.

Do I need to sign up?

We heavily recommend signing up for the Lab Session (9–11:30 AM) by pre-registering through Eventbrite. The Open Session (1–4 PM) is free and open to the public — no ticket required (optional RSVP helps us plan).

Is this event really free?

Yes! Both the Lab Session and Open Session are free to attend. If you enjoy the program and would like to support future BioCompass events, optional donations are welcome on-site or through our website.

Will my child be handling real brains?

Kids will see and explore a real sheep brain specimen up close. Trained instructors will handle the specimen — children will not be cutting or dissecting. Activities are hands-on in other safe ways (puzzles, games, experiments).

What if we don’t want to see the sheep brain?

The sheep brain station is just one part of the event. Families who prefer not to engage with it can skip that station and enjoy the many other puzzles, experiments, and activities we have planned.

Will there be photography at the event?

Yes. We sometimes take photos and short videos to share on our website, social media, or in future event materials. Because this event is designed for children, we will only photograph participants with a signed parental photo release.

Do parents need to stay?

Yes. A parent or guardian must remain on or near the site for the entire event.

What should we bring?

Just your curiosity! All materials are provided.
