About this Event

The Backstage Sessions at Signature Sounds

Guest Interviewer Brian Eyster w/ Guest Artist Larry Sparks

Boulder, Colorado KGNU DJ and Planet Bluegrass VP (and musician himself) Brian Eyster interviews the King of Bluegrass Soul, Larry Sparks

Sunday, January 24th at 8pm, ET

One of the luckiest things about working in music is the unforgettable life of backstage conversation. The off-handed chat of musicians and old friends, crossing paths out on the road, of radio personalities interviewing stars, of promoters chatting with players in green rooms, well into the small hours. This winter, on all the cold and locked-down Sunday nights, we’re bringing you behind the scenes for a new online series called the Backstage Sessions. We asked some of our favorite industry friends—dj's, music writers, podcast hosts, festival promoters, even musicians and dancers themselves—to choose an artist they'd love to talk to. Each Sunday is a different pairing, with conversation and unexpected music. The series is online at It’s by donation. So if you’re broke, come for free. Rolling in it? Throw in a $20 or more. The majority of the income goes to the interviewer and artist, or to a cause of their choice. The rest goes to keeping the Sig Sounds crew working till we can reopen our doors. The Backstage Sessions will run from January 2021-March 2021.

Guest interviewer: BRIAN EYSTER

We met Brian Eyster at the epic Aspen festival, Telluride Bluegrass, where, since 2005, he’s been VP and Communications Director for the mother ship Planet Bluegrass, which produces TBF, RockyGrass and Rocky Mountain Folks Festivals as well as the RockyGrass Academy and The Song School. Eyster was editor of Telluride Bluegrass Festival: Forty Years of Festivation.

Brian is also a DJ for KGNU, which airs in Boulder-Denver-Fort Collins — a regular host of the “Morning Sound Alternative” eclectic world folk and the popular Saturday morning “Old Grass Gnu Grass.”

He’s also a multi-instrumentalist himself, and has performed with Bonnie Paine, Shayne Koyczan, KC Groves, and others. He led a ska band in New Hampshire and an electric jamband in Boulder, CO. (As an aside, he won 3rd place in the dobro competition at 2003 RockyGrass.)

As director of the non-profit High Street Concerts in Lyons, CO, he’s presented concerts with Tony Trischka, The Mammals, Bruce Molsky, and Frank Wakefield. As a talent buyer, he has booked shows with the Infamous Stringdusters, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, James King, Frigg, Molly Tuttle, Gregory Alan Isakov, Uncle Earl, De Temps Antan, David Grier & Mike Compton, and Larry Sparks, among many others.

Brian is also a software engineer, with projects ranging from tools for image-guided neurosurgery to river-basin management, as well as internet radio and digital audio processing plugins.

While Sparks is most definitely a stylist and his approach to the music is more than a style, it is real with no gimmicks. After fifty years in the spotlight, Larry is still on a roll and creating some of his best music. Larry Sparks is bluegrass musics Ray Charles, no one can touch him. He is an absolute original - Alison Krauss

Sparks style is mature, seasoned and deeply expressive.

Throughout his long career Larry has stuck with what works. He has followed his vision and he has made an enormous contribution to the music. Larry Sparks has kept his music real.
