About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

If you've been writing Morning Pages or journaling consistently, first of all, CONGRATULATIONS. That's no small thing.

Hi, I'm Kelly Morgan and I've been writing Morning Pages off and on, mostly on, since 1996.

I've also loved facilitating LIVE Artist's Way Workshops— over 70 times in Hollywood (and 5 times online). But who's counting?

"You couldn't find a more sure-footed or inspiring guide than Kelly."

Julia Cameron, Author of The Artist's Way.

And now, mid-spring cleaning (my office and my life), I find myself flipping through old journals. Morning Pages stacked high. And I've found lots of good stories in there.

Most morning pages are tedious as hell to read, but within the pages, there are also some good memories and story seeds.

(If you haven't reread your pages, check out page 161 of The Artist’s Way. Julia gives instructions on the best way for you to read them.)

Morning Pages are a beautiful practice.
They’re a brain dump. A meditation. A lifeline.
They saved me.
But here’s the truth: they won’t teach you storytelling.

Writing the morning pages can help you get sober (as they did for me) or transform your life in some other way, but they won't make you a better writer or storyteller.

They won’t show you how to write a compelling scene.
They won’t shape your memories into a story someone else actually wants to read.
They won’t teach you craft, structure, narrative arc, character, and theme.

I had to learn the craft of writing somewhere else.

If you've tried to write a book, you know what I'm talking about.
You need to learn the structure of what makes a story work.

Once you learn how to write and craft stories, everything changes.

So YES, reading through weeks or months or years of morning pages can be fun, especially after you learn more about the structures involved in memoir writing.

Then even if you've never considered yourself a writer before.

There's poetry and blog posts hiding in the bones of your morning pages.

There's the blood of an essay or flash fiction running through your pages.

There are the muscles of a book. An autobiography for your family. A memoir about a time you survived cancer or your parents. There might be a fiction book based on your true life experiences.

If you say you want to write, but haven't been writing .... you'll find inspiration for stories flowing across your pages.

If you write more consistently, with the support of a writing coach and community who knows what you might produce?

Poetry. Stories. Blog posts. A book. What about writing an autobiography? A memoir? A fiction story based on your life experiences.

After pouring out your thoughts and feelings on the page, you've learned how to get out of your head and into the flow of writing.

You've captured memories from your past.

You have tools to level up your writing — and in this one night, I'll show you other creative tools to help you on this path.

It's time to do what you've been saying you want to do ... write!

This interactive, live Zoom workshop is for you if you're ready to take your scribbles, sparks, rants, and revelations from the Morning Pages and turn them into something with shape, heart, and maybe even a beginning, middle, and end.

Whether you're an aspiring or long-established writer, if you:

  • Have a drawer full of notebooks and wonder what’s next
  • Feel the itch to write “something real”, but perfectionism keeps jumping in your lap
  • Or you’re simply craving that old spark again...

It's Time to Set Other People's Worlds on Fire by Sharing Your Stories With Them — Take Your Next Steps in This Workshop.

A longtime improvisational writing teacher, memoir coach, and Artist’s Way facilitator, I'll show you how to transition from only writing morning pages into writing finished works of memoir.

What You’ll Get in this 2.5-Hour Workshop:

A playful, powerful experience using the 3 Core Tools of Improvisational Writing (yes, they're inspired by The Artist's Way, but they're also totally their own thing).

You’ll learn how to:

✅ Trust your wild first thoughts and creative instincts
✅ Use movement + unexpected prompts to unstick your imagination
✅ Break up with perfectionism and that inner critic who never shuts up
✅ Mine your Morning Pages for golden story nuggets
✅ Transform raw emotion into compelling writing
✅ Practice the underrated superpower of generous listening + feedback
✅ Collaborate with others to make writing way more fun and a lot less lonely

In other words, we’re going to warm up your inner storyteller and show you how to turn your real life into real good writing.

Why Now?

Because you’ve already shown up for yourself. You’ve done the Morning Pages.
Now let’s do something with all that magic.

By the end of the night, you’ll leave with:

  • New tools you can use right away
  • Pages you didn’t know you had in you
  • The confidence to start shaping your stories into something more
  • And… a sneak peek at how to keep the momentum going through the winter

There will also be a Q&A with Kelly at the end — bring your questions, your doubts, and your dreams.

EXPRESSIVE WRITING WORKS: IRENE'S STORY

Irene took an expressive writing workshop with me after her husband died and it changed everything.

Every week for 8-weeks Irene showed up to the small writing group that gathered in my West Los Angeles apartment and wrote about her husband's heart attack.

At first, Irene didn't want to share what she'd written out loud. She thought it might bum us out, but finally, she decided she needed to read what she'd written out loud. That gave her a sense of relief.

They say time alone does not heal all wounds, but after Irene used the creative tools of expressive writing to tell her story, she began to feel better. Sharing what she wrote out loud helped her get out of her body. It was a release.

Irene became a better writer and storyteller during the eight-week workshop, and on the 8th night of class, she wrote one last time about her husband's heart attack.

I looked around the room and saw tears in people's eyes. And lots of smiles. We felt her sadness and at the same, we felt hopeful and inspired.

Last I heard, Irene bought a new house in Northern California and is painting.
