Coral reefs house a quarter of all known marine species and are our most effective protection against hurricanes and floods. But warming waters have decimated their populations—in Florida, reefs are at just 1% of their historical abundance.
Yet some rare rebel reefs seem to defy the odds and remain strong. How?
In this talk, science writer & ocean expert Juli Berwald tells the story of her surprising discovery of one such reef off the coast of Honduras, and how she and her nonprofit, Tela Coral, are investigating what makes it resilient and how to bring that resilience to corals worldwide. She'll teach us about the science of corals, explore the ethical obligations we owe to our seas, and discuss the ways that natural resources help shape national identity.
