You'll Learn

In this workshop, you’ll be introduced to the core concepts and techniques of script lettering. Beginning with calligraphic strokes using a brush pen, you’ll practice creating and conceptualizing letterform compositions through hands-on exercises. Along the way, you’ll develop your hand lettering skills, study universal principles of letterforms, and expand your design toolkit in ways that can enrich your creative process. The workshop will be led by lettering artist, Aspacía Kusulas.

As part of the workshop, students will be guided through Primarium: A Case for Cursive, an exhibition on view at the HMCT Gallery that traces the history and present state of cursive writing. The displays will provide references that participants can draw upon to inspire their own lettering compositions. They will then be taught drawing techniques that help translate these references into original work. In addition, reference books from the HMCT archive will also be available for further research and exploration.
