OVERVIEW Increasingly, high impact science is conducted in teams. Managing these teams may seem straight forward initially, but these teams can be fraught with challenges like communicating across disciplinary boundaries, aligning goals and incentives, sharing resources and credit. These challenges become more complex within the context of COVID-19. A deliberate approach to planning and applying the science of teams to these collective scientific endeavors is required. The overall goal of this workshop is to provide attendees with an introduction to fundamental concepts of team science, with an emphasis on practical tools and strategies for building and managing effective research teams.

OBJECTIVES The specific objectives of this workshop are to:

1) Describe the three pillars of effective team science;

2) Discuss challenges in creating a shared team vision;

3) Practice styles and approaches to managing conflict;

4) Demonstrate strategies for building effective research teams; and

5) Share lessons learned by effective Johns Hopkins science teams.

TARGET AUDIENCE This workshop is appropriate for any Johns Hopkins or ICTR partner researcher interested in improving their ability to lead or work within research teams effectively. Whether you are starting a new team or seeking to enhance the effectiveness of your current team, this workshop will provide you with insights and tools to apply in your work.

WHAT TO EXPECT While this is a virtual event, it is a “hands on,” interactive community forum. The workshop will be broken down into three main sections corresponding to the three focus areas: the three pillars of team science, managing conflict, and building a team. Within each segment, experts from the National Cancer Institute will provide a short didactic overview. This will be followed by breakout group discussions in which participants will collaboratively work through a case study around the topic. Each segment will conclude with a question-and-answer session with one of our ICTR Team Science Award winning teams, based on their experience with the topic. There will be two 10-minute breaks, held between segments.
