Event description
Virtual Workshop: I Have a Book and a Source, Now What? Teaching Strategies to Blend Primary Source Learning with Picture Books

About this Event

Two-day Virtual Workshop:

Thursday, November 5, 2020, 4 PM CT- 5 PM CT & Thursday, November 19, 2020, 4 PM CT- 5 PM CT

Attendance to both one-hour workshops is mandatory.

There are many wonderful historical fiction and non-fiction picture books available for students to read AND there are many wonderful primary sources that can be used with these picture books to engage the most curious and reluctant readers alike!

In this virtual workshop, you'll learn strategies and techniques to blend primary source learning with a picture book and create your own "Book Kit".

A "Book Kit" includes:

  • A picture book
  • One strategy/technique you'd like to implement
  • A primary source(s)
  • A simple student activity

You'll receive $50 for participation, a picture book of your choice (up to $25), and printed copies of your primary source(s). We'll also donate a copy of your "Book Kit" to a local afterschool or summer youth program of your choice!

To receive 3 hours of credit for participation, a $50 stipend, a picture book, and printed primary sources, you will need to:

1) Pre-watch a one hour webinar, "Pairing Primary Sources and Picture Books", featuring Tom Bober, a Elementary Librarian and Former Teacher-in-Residence at the Library of Congress. In this recorded webinar, you'll be introduced to primary sources and learn about the wealth of picture books and primary sources that can be used in the K-8 classroom. https://www.loc.gov/item/webcast-9269/

2) Attend both one-hour synchronous virtual workshops held on Thursday, November 5th & 19th from 4 PM CT - 5 PM CT.

3) Share your Book Kit at the November 19th virtual workshop (We'll provide a simple Google slide template for you to add titles and links to fill up your Book Kit! We also offer you full support in creating your kit!)
