Teaching students effective ways to communicate their needs is key to decreasing challenging behaviors and increasing student success. This workshop focuses on teaching replacement behavior skills using evidence-based instructional strategies, such as functional communication training, video-modeling, behavioral skills training, and self-monitoring. An overview of these strategies is provided as well as discussion about the importance of planning for generalization early in the teaching process.

At the end of this section, you will be able to:

  1. Tell someone why we teach replacement behaviors.
  2. Describe four different teaching strategies.
  3. Explain why teaching generalization is important.
