Teaching Real-World Problem Solving in Mathematics

Teaching Real-World Problem Solving in Mathematics

By Keep Indiana Learning

Overview

Explore real-world problem solving and discover how to plan effective, engaging math instruction for all learners.

Indiana’s K–6 2023 math standards reference “real-world problem solving” thirty-one times. But what does that really mean for classroom instruction?

In this two-day workshop (with a one-hour virtual check-in in between), participants will:

  • Explore the 14 different problem types outlined in Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), applied across whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Learn the progression of how students develop strategies for the four operations—from direct modeling to counting to using derived facts and how this impacts your Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction.
  • Examine what it looks like when standards call for solving real-world problems using place value knowledge, properties of operations, and equations with the unknown in all positions.

Together, we’ll unpack the complexities of problem solving, link them to assessment expectations, and leave with clear, practical strategies for supporting all learners in reaching (and exceeding) proficiency.
