Topic: Shoreland and setbacks: The Minnesota Zoning Atlas.

Land use zoning has a powerful influence on the environment, social and economic outcomes. Because zoning law has been delegated to local governments with little state oversight, there are few standardized measures of how cities zone. Zoning laws are published in a wide variety of formats that defy computerized extraction. The Minnesota Zoning Atlas at the University of Minnesota is a contributing project to the National Zoning Atlas which is harmonizing zoning laws around the country into one dataset. In this presentation we give an overview of methods and challenges, and initial findings. Zoning in the Twin Cities is characterized by broadly similar rules for single family homes across the region, with more variability in the regulation of multi-family and mixed use zones across cities.

Featured Presenters: Evan Roberts, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Population Studies at University of Minnesota; Natalia Uro-De Leon is a Zoning Code Analyst at University of Minnesota's Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation.
