‘Taster’ Three hour Introductory Map Reading Course in The Peak District.

The Right on Course ‘Taster’ is aimed at those new to exploring the countryside and want to build confidence employing some map reading techniques.  After a brief safety chat about hiking equipment and route planning we’ll head out on a journey of countryside exploration during which you’ll learn how to use a map to know where you are. You’ll have the opportunity to ask Steve any other questions you have about exploring the British Countryside.

Starting at 9:00am prompt and finishes around 12:30pm in time for lunch somewhere pretty. The course will go ahead in all weathers, please come prepared and wear suitable hiking boots, waterproofs, warm layers, a drink and a packed lunch.

The Learning Outcomes for the course are:

  1. Understand the nature of a map as a two dimensional plan.
  2. Understand how to use map symbols and scales, on a variety of maps.
  3. Orientate the map with a compass.
  4. Use the orientated map to indicate direction of travel.
  5. Use linear features (e.g. paths and tracks) as handrails in simple navigation exercises.
  6. Estimate distance on both map and ground.
  7. Plan a safe, suitable walk.
  8. Understand access rights and responsibilities.
  9. Demonstrate an awareness of local and national access issues and access legislation.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of the Countryside Code, and of procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

Are there toilets at the meeting place?

Yes. Steve aims to start his courses near public facilities.

What about car parking fees?

There is likely to be a car parking fee at the meeting point.

Is equipment included?

Navigation equipment will be supplied by Steve, namely an appropriate map and compass. If you have your own, please bring it along and we can discuss its suitability and you can practice using it outdoors. You might want to bring along a pen/pencil and paper to make your own notes.

What should I wear?

You will need to come prepared to spend the morning outdoors, it may be wet and windy so please ensure you have a good waterproof. We will be on paths and tracks so strong outdoor footwear is essential. Warm layers work best and remember to bring a drink and packed lunch.

What else should I bring?

Steve also recommends plenty of spare warm clothing for afterwards. Maybe a flask for a hot drink and some high energy snacks. There may be a cafe near by, so bring some pennies for a cake and a coffee.

Can children come on this course?

You must be 16 to attend this course. Under 18s are only allowed on Right on Course training when accompanied by a parent or their legal guardian.

What about photos, social media etc?

What about dogs, can I bring my four legged friend?

Walking with a dog is a fantastic experience but I find them a distraction and to get the most from the day I prefer you leave your dog at home.

How far will we walk?

We can expect to cover around 5km on the day. This is not a challenge walk but a learning experience.
