'Target The Trash For The Turtles'- A Coastal Clean Up!
Overview
This is a coastal clean up event run by NSW TurtleWatch, in cooperation with Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue, The Rotary Club of Ballina On Richmond , The Ballina Shire Council and Bunnings Warehouse. We want our local community to help target the trash for the turtles, before marine turtle nesting season begins in November.
Marine turtles nest throughout the entire NSW coastline and NSW TurtleWatch aims to engage citizen scientists to assist with monitoring NSW Beaches for the presence/absence of nesting marine turtles and promote public awareness about potential threats to them. Clean coastlines helps ensure that there are no obstacles that may hinder the success of a marine turtle, to lay a successful nest.
Come and join our clean up crew on Lighthouse Beach in Ballina. We will also be covering Shelly Beach as well. We will be meeting at the Lighthouse Beach Carpark to brief everyone on the event instructions, go through a risk assesment and complete registration. Afterwards we will gather together under the marquees, to sort and analyse the trash. All data collected will be submitted to the Tangaroa Blue Marine Debris Database. There will be a lucky door prize on the day supported by Bunnings Warehouse and anyone who registers will be in the draw to win.
