An evening tarantula hike in Black Star Canyon is a thrilling adventure that combines natural wonder with just the right touch of mystery. As the sun sets and the canyon cools, tarantulas begin their slow, fascinating crawl through the trails in search of mates—a rare sight that few ever witness. With stars overhead and the quiet hum of nighttime wildlife around you, this hike turns into a unique blend of wildlife observation and peaceful nighttime exploration. It’s a perfect way to experience the canyon's wilder side, up close and unforgettable.
Fun for the whole family! Enjoy the night air, peaceful atmosphere, starry skies and chances of encountering nocturnal wildlife. Stop frequently to listen, look, feel and even smell for various forms of wildlife evidence. Search for burrows, nests, tracks, scat (droppings), feathers, fur and eye shine. One of the highlights of this journey is the opportunity to relax in total darkness and silence for roughly 5 minutes at the turnaround point. Even though we cannot guarantee wildlife encounters, we'll have fun exploring together. An easy 2-3 mile round-trip journey on a wide dirt trail with minimum elevation gain and fairly smooth terrain, except for a few gullies and potholes. Carry snacks and beverages to enjoy along the way. Not recommended for those with mobility limitations, medical issues or night blindness.
