Talk Transformation!: Preparing Toronto for an Extreme Weather Future - Community and Infrastructure Resilience

Take part in the City of Toronto's first TalkTransformation! event.

TalkTransformation! Preparing for an Extreme Weather Future – Community and Infrastructure Resilience will exchange ideas on ways that Toronto can build its resilience given the predicted rise in temperature and precipitation, as the year 2050 approaches.

The event will be moderated by Robyn Shyllit and will include a discussion by experts on climate change and resiliency including:

Seana Irvine joined Evergreen in 1997 and has been the Chief Operating Officer since 2010. As COO, Seana helps Evergreen balance its creative and entrepreneurial effort with the number of hours in a day. Seana also oversees Evergreen's staff and volunteers, as well as risk management planning, policies and procedures. For 13 years, Seana was Evergreen's Program Director, leading the millenial-phase growth of Evergreen's national programs and the design of community programs at Evergreen Brick Works. Seana has a Masters in Environmental Studies (Planning) and an Honours Degree in Environmental and Resource Studies. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for The Equality Effect and volunteers with Girls Rock Camp Toronto, and previously served on the Board for The Stop Community Food Centre and the Sustainability Network.

Grant Humes became the first Executive Director of the Toronto Financial District BIA (FDBIA) in 2012. The Toronto Financial District BIA represents Canada’s premier business centre, an area that includes Union Station, the PATH underground walkway and Canada’s five major banks and most prominent firms. With a mandate to promote economic development in the area, the FDBIA’s initiatives include developing and implementing a comprehensive public realm strategy for the Financial District, and showcasing the daily activity of its thriving businesses.

Patricia McCarney is a Professor of Political Science and the Director of the Global Cities Institute at the University of Toronto and President and CEO of the World Council on City Data. Dr. McCarney was integral to the development of the newly published ISO 37120, the first International Standard for Cities. This ISO Working Group is building a family of international standards on global city indicators for sustainable cities, resilient cities and smart cities.

Lucy Cummings is the Executive Director of Faith & the Common Good, where she supports diverse faith communities that contribute to greener, healthier, more resilient neighborhoods. Prior to her work at Faith & the Common Good, Lucy lead Seacology UK, a non-profit environmental group devoted to protecting island biodiversity using a community-based approach.

TalkTransformation! is an event series which brings together thought-leaders and community experts to discuss critical ideas, technologies and programs that Toronto will need to consider in reaching its 80% greenhouse gas reductions goals by 2050. The events will explore the connections and synergies among different sectors (health, business, social) and highlight the opportunities where the co-benefits of climate action now can enhance the quality of life and grow Toronto's local economy in future.
