Continuing Education Credits Available: Western New York Rural Area Health Education Center, Inc. (WNY R-AHEC) is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Boards for Social Work (#SW-0685), Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health Practitioners (#MHC-0268), and Speech Language Pathology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers, physical therapists and assistants, occupational therapists, and assistants, licensed mental health counselors, and speech language pathologists.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define and describe the Davis Bowtie model.
2. Give examples of the five social determinants of health (SDOH) per the Centers for Disease Control; explain their interrelatedness, and their influence on client risks and outcomes.
3. Argue for the importance of primary and secondary prevention measures even in the tertiary care setting and describe their impact to client outcomes.
4. Interview clients effectively to assess their induvial SDOH needs.
5. Discuss the unique role of registered nursing to address of clients’ SDOH.
Melissa Davis, DNP, RN
Bio: Melissa Davis DNP RN CNE is the Program Director of Bryant and Stratton’s Baccalaureate Nursing Program in Albany, NY. She has been a registered nurse for over 45 years and has had 15 years of experience in teaching nurses at the undergraduate level. With current American Association of Colleges of Nursing (ACCN) charges for registered nurses to address client’s social determinants of health, Dr. Davis has initiated a teaching model for undergraduate nurses to do so with each one-on-one nursing encounter. Dr. Davis is affiliated with the National League for Nursing, American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society, and Association of Community Health Nursing Educators.
