About this Event

In the age of big data and ubiquitous connectivity, we rely on distributed software that runs on data centers and the cloud to access data and perform complex analysis on large data sets. The network and systems upon which these applications run necessitate cross-layer optimizations ranging from hardware architecture of network routers and servers to system, networking, and application software. In this talk, Professor Balajee Vamanan of UIC will highlight some of his recent research in datacenter and cellular networks, and discuss how these optimizations help address the grand challenge of being able to access and analyze vast amounts of data on demand.

Professor Vamanan's research broadly spans computer systems and networks. His recent work focuses on datacenter networks, cellular networks, networks for big data, in-memory caching systems, and programmable data planes. His research has been published in top venues in computer networking and computer architecture such as SIGCOMM and MICRO, and has been funded by the National Science Foundation. Prof. Vamanan received his Ph.D. degree from Purdue University in 2015. He was a senior design Engineer at Nvidia between 2004 and 2008, and he was the lead designer of the memory sub-system of MacBook Air. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science department at UIC.

What is TechReady Illinois?

TechReady Illinois provides access to discounted courses for unemployed and underemployed Illinois residents looking to upskill or pivot into a career in technology. It is a growing program created through a partnership between two Chicago nonprofits, P33 and Discovery Partners Institute. This webinar is one in a series of webinars offered by TechReady Illinois on Wednesdays at 12pm CDT. Topics range from learning about TechReady and its educational and nonprofit partners to important career skills like networking and agility to topics in technology.

What is DPI?

The Discovery Partners Institute empowers people to jumpstart their tech careers or companies in Chicago. Led by the University of Illinois System in partnership with local and global research universities, DPI does three things centered around economic development: tech talent development for high-demand tech jobs; applied research and development; and building a stronger tech ecosystem.

What is P33?

Embracing Chicago’s innovation roots, P33 is the catalyst fostering better connections between Chicago stakeholders and the global tech and innovation community to facilitate economic growth.
