Overview

Synchromy Music presents a workshop of Isaac Schankler's new opera "The Joining" with libretto by Aiden Feltkamp.

Synopsis:

The Joining is a speculative fiction opera about the collision of two civilizations, the Underland and the Overland. Frem, an Underlander technician and inventor, must travel to the prosperous Overland for the first time in generations to seek help with an impending famine. The Overlanders take an interest in Frem's golem Tachlis, an artificial lifeform that is more than it first appears.

The Joining uses the golem, the creature of clay and mud from Jewish folklore, to explore our own relationship with technology, and the ways technology is used to make us complicit in our own exploitation, oppression, and dehumanization.
