About the films
Opponent (2023) (Swedish: Motståndaren; Persian: دشمن) is a powerful drama from Swedish director Milad Alami that explores identity, exile, and the fight for dignity. The story follows Iman, a former Iranian wrestler seeking asylum in Sweden with his wife and daughters. As he attempts to join the Swedish national wrestling team to strengthen his immigration case, a deeper truth emerges—Iman was forced to flee Iran after being outed as a gay man, a revelation that could have cost him his life under the country's harsh laws. With gripping performances and emotional depth, Opponent is a poignant reflection on survival, secrecy, and the courage to live authentically.
