About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

The Surry County Office of Substance Abuse Recovery, in partnership with the Department of Adult Corrections, the Piedmont Triad Regional Council, and theNCWorks Career Center of Surry County proudly present the Surry County Reentry and Recovery Simulation!

This interactive simulation allows participants to step into the shoes of individuals returning to their communities post-incarceration. The goal is to foster a deeper understanding of the significant and complex challenges they face while rebuilding their lives, including finding stable housing, securing employment, obtaining identification, and fulfilling legal obligations.

Reentry is not a simple or straightforward process. Each person experiences unique challenges shaped by their individual history, available resources, and personal needs. “Successful” reentry doesn’t happen automatically. It requires careful planning, meaningful support, and intentional navigation.

A recovery component has also been added to reflect the additional barriers faced by individuals with substance use disorders post-incarceration. Missed job opportunities, court dates, or probation meetings often result from treatment schedules or relapses. By including these realities, we aim to show how closely recovery and reentry are intertwined and how coordinated recovery services are critical to long-term success.

The ultimate goal of this simulation is to build empathy and understanding among local officials, service providers, justice system stakeholders, and community members. Participants will walk away with greater awareness of the time-consuming, emotionally taxing, and often frustrating realities of navigating reentry and recovery, highlighting the urgent need for integrated systems of support. This experience offers invaluable insight for anyone working to assist justice-involved individuals in their journey home.

This event is free. A light contitental style breakfast will be provided beginning at 9:30.
