🥋 What to Expect in Your First Karate Class

Your first step into our dojo is the beginning of something powerful.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be guided with personal one-on-one attention so you feel supported, welcomed, and confident. In your very first class, you’ll learn how to safely warm up, how to perform basic punches, blocks, and kicks with correct form, and how to move with confidence — so you build strong foundations and avoid injuries caused by poor technique.

We don’t throw you into the deep end — we teach you step by step with care, clarity, and encouragement.

Because to us, your karate journey matters from day one.

Whether you’re here for confidence, fitness, focus, or the love of martial arts, we’ll support you at every stage — from regular dojo training to karate leadership development, sport karate competitions, and ultimately, a lifelong healthy habit that strengthens body, mind, and spirit.

Wherever your journey takes you — we’ll walk it with you.

Just come along in loose clothing you can move freely in, a water bottle and something warm to put on after class. We train in bare feet, however if you need to wear shoes due to an injury that is OK too.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this workshop suitable for?

Suitable from primary aged children and above. It is never too late to learn!

What clothing should I wear to my free trial Karate class?

Just wear your normal everyday clothes that are loose fitting so you can move and stretch freely. Make sure you bring something warm to put on after training.

How experienced is Sensei Patricia in Karate?

Sensei Patricia has been teaching karate since 1986. She has been a Karate New Zealand National Champion, and an International Medalist as well as a two-time recipient of Prime Minister's Scholarship to study karate in Okinawa and Japan. We use local halls to bring karate to your doorstep.

What benefits will I gain from learning karate?

Anyone who wants to empower themselves and/or their family. Karate not only trains you in essential self defence skills, it builds character, discipline, focus and resilience. Who wouldn’t want that. Suitable for all levels of fitness. Don’t ‘WAIT to get FIT FIRST’ - just show up.

Do I need to be fit to start karate?

NO - you just need to take the first step and show up. We meet you where you are at and your first classes will be slower as you take time to learn the correct pathways of your punches, blocks and kicks. Once you master these then you will build your fitness and you train.
