BASIC OPERATING ROOM (OR) ORIENTATION
PURPOSE: To provide the learner with the essential basic knowledge needed to safely enter, navigate, observe and participate in the OR. Our goal is to decrease the stress related to an unfamiliar environment, allowing the learner to get the maximum benefit from their visit.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: A basic introduction to the setting of the OR based on the ACS/ASE Medical Student Simulation-Based Surgical Skills Curriculum. Topics include proper dress, basic OR etiquette, OR safety, roles of individuals in the OR, where/how to stand, and principles of asepsis. Learners will have the opportunity to participate in a simulated experience of scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and removing their ‘dirty’ gown.
AUDIENCE: Any individual over the age of 16 who plans to visit, observe, or participate in the OR. Individuals who are under the age of 18 will need to have guardian permission (this form will be emailed to you upon registration and can be signed, scanned and sent back or brought with you to the course).
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
Identify the role of observer vs. participant in the operating room
Verbalize the process of preparing to enter the OR (clothing, hair, etc.)
Review basic safety rules of the OR
Discuss the roles and relationships of each individual in the room

This can be shared via email, social media, or shown on the spot to OR staff or mentors- see https://credly.com for more information. Students will receive a pre- and post-assessment, and can opt-in to receive a 3-month follow up survey to determine comfort level and retention.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Please read through all of the FAQ below-If you do not see the answer to your questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
Why does it say 'Free' but the course is $40?
Because this is being offered through a University, we are not able to collect payment through a 3rd party. Eventbrite was the tool chosen to manage registration for this course. $40 includes handouts, materials for simulation, ongoing access to resources/tips/suggestions, and electronic badge upon course completion (see course description).
What's the refund policy?
Once payment is received, there are no refunds unless the course is cancelled by the instructor. If you are unable to attend, please email email@example.com and cancel your registration on Eventbrite so your spot is freed up for another to attend.
Where is the course held?
The course is held in the basement (Garden level) of the Eccles Health Sciences Library (EHSL) on the University of Utah campus. EHSL is located in between the School of Medicine and the Health Sciences Education Building, across the sidewalk from the College of Nursing. For more specific directions, see the link under 'Where should I park'
Where should I park?
Parking at the University is often difficult. The area is patrolled until 8pm and if it says 'No Parking', they mean it! There are instructions for TRAX, parking and other transportation options on the EHSL website: http://library.med.utah.edu/lib/howtofindus.php#parking
Do I get to go into the actual operating room during this course?
Because of HIPAA/privacy regulations, we are unable to take students into and through the operating room during the course. However, using a GoPro, we have created a walk through video taking students into and through the OR to show what each step of the way looks like. We will discuss and pause as we go to discuss considerations, safety issues, and other questions that students may have as well as possible scenarios you may encounter and how to handle them.
What is UCISE?
UCISE stands for the Utah Center for Innovation & Simulation in Education. We are a newly Accredited Education Institute through the American College of Surgeons, under the direction of Daniel Vargo, MD and William Peche, MD with Ruth Braga MSN, RN in administration. Our center trains medical students, residents, physicians and other health care personnel throughout the campus and community. Read more about our accreditation here
How should I dress?
Please dress 'professionally comfortable'. You will be donning actual OR gowns and gloves, standing, and moving about so you will not want tight or warm clothing, and you definitely won't be needing that suit/tie or heels! Cool, comfortable and professional is key.
Will participation in the course assist me in finding mentors, shadowing or with admission to medical school?
Participation in the class does not imply or guarantee shadowing opportunities, connections to mentors, admission, or anything resembling it! Ruth is not affiliated in any way with the admissions office at the University of Utah or any other institution.
Will my information be shared?
No. Students will be asked to complete a pre and post evaluation at the time of the course. If students opt in, they can provide their email address to be contacted with a 3-month follow up survey. Student information is kept confidential.
Why do you have tickets for different schools/areas?
Courses are offered at the University of Utah campus. If you are in a different area and would like to see a course offered at your institution or in your area, select that ticket, leave us your email address and then share with your friends/classmates! If we get enough interest, we will hold a course in your area and you will be the first to know! You do NOT have to be a student at these schools to attend, but we will most likely hold the course in that area.
