Join Resilient Red Hook and Red Hook Business Alliance with special guest Jill Cornell, Community Engagement Program Manager at NYC Emergency Management to learn about the Strengthening Communities program

In Red Hook, where the impacts of Hurricane Sandy still resonate, strong community connections are key to emergency preparedness. Join us for a special event with Jill Cornell, Community Engagement Program Manager at NYC Emergency Management, to learn how we can build on our local coalition to access funding and training through the Strengthening Communities Program to create an emergency prepardness plan. This program helps existing coalitions co-create a community-specific emergency plan. Nonprofits, tenant leaders, business owners, and neighbors are invited to join our coalition for the opportunity to connect across sectors and build a Red Hook-wide plan to respond to future crises.

At this event we will learn about:

  • Create a neighborhood resource map and identify shared vulnerabilities
  • Develop a communication strategy and volunteer/donation management plans
  • Get coaching, peer learning, and support to strengthen our network
  • Gain a formal role in the City’s emergency response infrastructure
  • Applying for funding to build and lead a Community Emergency Plan

Together, we can ensure that Red Hook is prepared for the next disaster. Let’s build a resilient future. Come learn how to participate and strengthen our coalition for emergency planning with the support and guidance of NYC Emergency Management.

Organized by

Empowered by the spirit of unity that helped the Red Hook community survive Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy, our vision for a resilient and thriving future is to work as a holistic community to strengthen Red Hook by minimizing differences and maximizing cooperation among all who live, work, and play here. Mindful of the growing climate-related risks to our beloved low-lying community and the immediate need for improved emergency preparedness measures, our actions will serve to help to develop measures that will protect our neighborhood from flood inundation, increase the safety of our citizens, and move towards a resilient community. We are committed to maintaining and expanding affordable housing, environmental justice, and increased economic activity with an emphasis on local job development, recognizing the importance of their interdependence.
