Presentation Information:

A successful private practice requires the understanding of both running a small business and applying proven clinical skills. This four-hour training will focus on key strategies needed to build and manage a successful private practice. It was developed to enhance licensed clinicians' knowledge and understanding of private practice, both legally and ethically.

At the conclusion of the workshop, clinicians should be able to understand basic record-keeping, financial management, marketing and the role of AI. Participants will also gain a clear understanding of their responsibility to themselves and their clients.


Objectives of the Training:

  • Participants will have an understanding of what a private practice entails.
  • Participants will understand the importance of a business team.
  • Participants will understand the importance of basic bookkeeping, budgeting, setting a fee for service, and record keeping.
  • Participants will learn the issues involved in opening a practice, managing the necessary paperwork and dealing with taxes and insurance.
  • Participants will have a basic understanding of the key elements in marketing a private practice.
  • Participants will learn the ethical considerations involved in running a private practice.
  • Participants will have an understanding of the role that AI can and cannot play in a private practice.
  • Participants will learn how to avoid burnout.


This training is worth a maximum of four (4) contact hours.

About the Presenter:

Daniel Richards, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC is a licensed clinical professional counselor and national clinical counselor. Dr. Richards holds an associate's degree in business administration from the University of Maine at Orono, a bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in counseling from the University of Southern Maine. He received his Ph.D. in counseling from the State University of New York in Buffalo. He began practicing as a counselor in 1975. In 1983, he achieved board certification with the National Board for Certified Counselors and he became licensed in the state of Maine as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor 1992. Dr. Richards has served as president of a number of organizations including Maine School Counselor Association, New England Personnel and Guidance Association and Maine Counselors Association. While serving on the board of directors for the American Personnel and Guidance Association (now known as the American Counseling Association), Dr. Richards conceived the idea of establishing the Maine Clinical Council Association (Maine Mental Health Counselors Association) which he founded and served as the first president. In 1990, he was asked to author the first book on private practice titled, “Building and Managing Your Private Practice.” His dedication to the success of private practice has led him to write over 50 articles and conduct over 75 workshops and trainings on various mental health and counseling issues across the United States and Canada.

He is a person who has a unique blend of education, business expertise and a dynamic presentation style. Dr. Richards has learned from experience about the risks, failures and successes that come from building a private practice. Establishing and managing a successful private practice demands a thorough understanding of running a small business, coupled with proven clinical expertise.
