Strategic Projects for whom? Challenges and local realities of EU’s strategic extractive projects outside of the EU

Earlier this year, the European Commission approved 36 strategic projects (23 within the EU and 13 beyond its borders), despite mounting concerns from affected communities. This panel brings those local voices to the forefront, highlighting the concerns behind the projects, their policies (or lack thereof) and historical, as well as potential social and environmental harms tied to the companies that operate these projects. Are these projects truly strategic or is the EU overlooking some key red flags? Join us to explore how the EU can strengthen its selection and monitoring process to prevent human rights abuses and ecological damage.
