Do I have to be an experienced writer/storyteller/performer?

Accepted Answer

No! This class will address all experience levels. We will look at fundamentals of storytelling - both writing and performance. All are welcome.

Do I have to be fat to participate?

Accepted Answer

Fat Theatre Project doesn't gatekeep based on size. If you are down with fat liberation and you have lived fat experience, this is the place for you!

Question 3

Is it okay that I'm still struggling with the ideas of fat acceptance and fat liberation?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! Unlearning decades of toxic diet culture and anti-fat bias is a lot of work! This is not the type of class where everyone will be forced to share their deep, dark secrets and their sad feelings. We may explore hard feelings, but the ultimate goal is create joyful fat art.

Question 4

Do I have to keep my camera on?

Accepted Answer

No. It's a little easier to build community and connection when we can see each other face's, but it will not be required to turn your camera on.

Question 5

What platform will the class be on? Will these classes be recorded in case I miss one?

Accepted Answer

We will hold the classes on Zoom. We will not be recording meetings for the privacy of all involved.

Question 6

Is the writing I create in this class my own or does Fat Theatre Project own it?

Accepted Answer

You own it! If you go on to publish or produce and you want to give us a shout out, great! But it is your work. We may ask to share pieces on our social media, but would only do that with the express permission of the creator.

Question 7

Are we only going to write about being fat/fatness?

Accepted Answer

No! We'll explore lots of different writing exercises and prompts. It will most often be up to the writer where the story goes.

Question 8

Is this class only for playwrights?

Accepted Answer

Writers of all genres are welcome - fiction, playwrighting, poetry, essayists, musicians, actors, etc.

Question 9

Is there an end goal or project?

Accepted Answer

One of our goals with this class will be to create a five minute story that is somehow related to the ideas of fat liberation. This "story" can be truth, fiction, prose, poetry, performance, etc. Participants will have the option to share their final piece in class.

Question 10

Is there anything off-limits?

Accepted Answer

We know that there there can be a lot of triggering ideas and words around fatness. We will decide as a group which topics we might want to avoid or take care around.

I can't afford this class, are there any options for me?

Accepted Answer

Question 12

Where does the fee for this class go?

Accepted Answer

We believe in full financial transparency. A percentage of the ticket sales will automatically get absorbed into Eventbrite. With the remaining funds, 70% will go to the instructor and 30% will go to fund future projects for FTP.
