Stitching Circles: Mandala-Inspired Embroidery with Tabitha Moses
Overview
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the meditative craft of hand embroidery through circular, symmetrical designs inspired by mandalas - timeless symbols found in many cultures.
A chance to slow down in this season of rest and recuperation, to enjoy the gentle ebb and flow of conversation as we stitch together. You’ll learn simple techniques to design and embroider your own mandala-inspired pattern in a calm and friendly atmosphere.
We’ll consider the cultural roots of mandalas and look at ancient and modern circular designs for inspiration.
This workshop is perfect for complete beginners and anyone wanting to refresh their sewing skills, as well as experienced embroiderers.
All materials and equipment will be provided, along with hot drinks aplenty.
You just need to bring a packed lunch.
There will also be a chance to browse and purchase publications featuring my work, if you’d like to take something home with you.
Note: While mandalas hold deep spiritual meaning in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, our focus will be on the universal idea of circles as symbols of wholeness and the cyclical nature of life.
A bit about me...
I studied embroidery at art school and, after several years working in costume for film and TV, completed a masters degree in textiles. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love to stitch.
Through fabric and thread, I explore personal and shared stories. During 2022 I worked with Squash on a year of personal and community mandalas which included me stitching from sunrise to sunset on the Winter Solstice and, alongside many other people, making a huge, room-sized mandala from the Squash garden cuttings. Alongside exhibiting my work nationally and internationally, I love sharing what I’ve learned and supporting others on their creative paths. I’ve taught in universities across the UK, and worked with people of all ages and backgrounds in a variety of cultural settings.
As a qualified coach and arts therapist-in-training, I work creatively and deeply with individuals in ways that complement my studio and workshop practice.
When I’m not stitching, I enjoy singing with Hope St Harmonies and dancing with the mid-life, avant-garde dance troupe, Hot Gusset.
