La Reina Del Barrio, Inc. in partnership with the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) raise awareness about the emotional, psychological, physical and spiritual impact of domestic violence and the power of healing through an immersive experience.
Centered around Rhina Valentin's narrative “Sticky Notes No Longer Hurt Me,” is an interactive show that features an immersive ritual where participants step into the story, reflecting on their own voices and casting off negative words. Through the act of release, the room transforms into a space of collective healing and renewed identity.
The narrative of “Sticky Notes No Longer Hurt Me” by Rhina Valentin offers a powerful backdrop for this interactive experience. It illustrates the internal struggles many individuals face, particularly regarding self-worth and the damaging impact of negative self-talk, which can be exacerbated when experiencing psychological, emotional and spiritual abuse in domestic violence. As Joy grapples with degrading words that symbolize her silent suffering, the audience can reflect on their own experiences and feelings, emphasizing that harm is not always visible.
The ritual of tearing down and burning these notes serves as a powerful act of reclaiming identity and space. During this gathering, participants will engage in this cathartic ritual together, creating a tangible way to let go of harmful thoughts and experiences.
The partnership with VIP aims to provide resources for survivors of domestic violence which includes psycho educational counseling, child and adolescent therapy, sexual assault resources, parenting groups, dv support groups, economic empowerment, housing, restorative justice and community circles.
Additionally, participants of VIP’s Economic Justice Program will be onsite selling home made crafts and providing small samples of their delicious catering menus.
EJP is an economic justice model informed by its clients, as many survivors seek alternative income sources outside the formal economy. A key initiative is the ArteSanando program, which promotes business development and entrepreneurship, helping survivors create businesses through selling homemade food and handcrafted items.
Through awareness, education, and shared experiences, together we can empower individuals to break free from the cycle of abuse and reclaim their narratives, fostering a more compassionate and informed community.
"Sticky Notes No Longer Hurt Me" would not have been possible without the support of the Milagros Legacy Foundation, 100 Men Rising, and El Barrio ArtSpace.
A portion of the proceeds from the door will be donated to The Violence Intervention Program.
