About this event
Steps in the Sand for the Carroll Family
Because no family walks alone.
This special Illawarra community charity get together invites us all to come together in support of the Carroll family. We will be taking a casual beach walk where each step along the sand represents care, compassion, and connection — the very heart of what makes our community strong.
Whether you’re walking, donating, or simply showing up to share your encouragement, your presence will make a difference.
All profits will go directly to the Carroll family.
Meet at Fairy Meadow Surf Club to register, then 4pm begins our relaxed walk north towards Towradgi beach and back again. There is a bbq cooking up your sausage sizzle, where you can collect (plus your drink) and head into the surf club function room to enjoy and mingle in a relaxed atmosphere.
The family are local Nippers at this club, and we are grateful that Fairy Meadow Surf Club is able to support this family by offering the function centre for us to use for this
A little about Luke. First and foremost he is a proud family man. A Doting father to Chloe and Nicholas and husband to Kristina. A best friend to countless people and friend to many more. He is a son to amazing parents, a sibling, cousin and so much more. Luke always puts everyone else first.
Luke received the devastating and shattering news in September 2022 that he had colorectal cancer. Before he even started the journey to try and beat cancer it was already stage 4 (meaning it had left the host organ) and had spread to his liver and lungs.
He took the typical Luke approach and talked his friends and family through his diagnosis helping everyone come to terms with his heart breaking situation. Being the sort of bloke who quite literally would give you the shirt of his back, it was the only way Luke would tackle this journey - head on. He is a man of honour and is loyal to the bone and doesn't know how to roll over.
Luke has recently just undertaken his 50th round of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy. A milestone that is a bitter pill to swallow. He has also completed 3 rounds of radiation treatment and a liver resection in December 2024 to try and cut out the cancerous liver tissue to no avail. His drive to try and beat cancer is like his drive for life - full commitment and do everything in his power. There has been some extremely difficult times with the liver resection and initial immunotherapy but he did it all with a smile on his face and I'm sure everyone can attest to the fact he never complained once.
These funds are to help complete their house rennovations and for the medical costs incurred for Luke from here on. We feel it's a drop in the ocean for the commitment he has for his family and friends and is a small ounce of gratitude we can show him to say thank you, put a smile on his face and help his family.
Together, we can remind the Carroll family that they are not alone on this journey.
Let’s make every step count — together.
