In this hands-on STEM Design Challenge, students ages 8 - 12 will explore techniques for moving and containing objects with everyday materials. Students will design and build guides, devices, and containers to move balls down, through, and over various obstacles and into goals. Have FUN controlling the chaos!

This workshop will be led by the Silicon Valley chapter of Destination Imagination. The workshop is designed to develop skills for understanding and using the properties of materials, categorized loosely as extenders, connectors, and controllers. Students will create combinations of everyday materials that will have specific properties or functions such as height, length, strength, constraint, protection, placement, and retrieval. There is no set design or instructions for students to follow. They will be guided through some basic concepts and building blocks and then challenged to design and build a structure, device, or pathway that have specific characteristics.

Everyday materials include paper, straws, craft sticks, coffee stirrers, chenille sticks, cups, paper plates, paper clips, rubber bands, string, foil, string, mailing labels, toothpicks, pencils, cardboard tubes, and plastic utensils. Weights include washers, Ping Pong balls, golf balls, cans, and marbles. Occasionally, scissors will be provided, but most of the time, students will be not be using any tools.
